Set against the notable skyline of Montemor Castle just an hour from Lisbon, L’AND Vineyards — a member of travel resource THE AFICIONADOS — is a refined retreat celebrating the architecture, gastronomy, and serenity of Portugal’s Alentejo region. Designed by renowned Brazilian architect Márcio Kogan of Studio MK27, the 45 villas and suites bring contemporary lines into dialogue with the natural textures of oak, slate, and whitewashed plaster.
Inside, the palette is restrained and earthy, accented with design pieces by Tom Dixon and Jorge Zalzuspin, and textured with works by Michael Biberstein and Fernando Marante. Private patios, plunge pools, and retractable roofs call the night sky indoors; an ode to the region’s wide horizons.

Wellness is an undercurrent here. At the 800 square metre Vinotherapy Spa by Austria’s Vinoble Cosmetics, treatments harness the antioxidant power of the estate’s own grapes—skin, pulp, and all. With interiors by Kogan and landscaping by Lisbon’s PROAP studio, the spa features a sauna, hammam, indoor heated pool and treatment rooms, all seamlessly connected to the surrounding groves of orange and oak. Outside, a lakeside platform and pool offer further immersion in the Alentejo landscape.
The culinary program is led by chef David Jesus, and distills Portugal’s gastronomic roots into fine dining at MAPA, as well as relaxed plates at Café da Viagem. With ingredients sourced from organic estate gardens, biodynamic farmers, and local fishermen, the menus blend invention with flavour. At MAPA, dishes are grounded in the region but elevated by technique, while head sommelier Pedro Durand offers pairings from the estate’s vineyard; where Touriga Nacional, Syrah, and Verdelho thrive in the Mediterranean sun. At Café da Viagem, a wine bar and al-fresco terrace offer a slower, simpler pleasure under the pergola.
Conceived by the Sousa Cunhal family and led by CEO José Cunhal, L’AND Vineyards is a retreat shaped by heritage and vision. Its offerings of design, wellness, and cuisine a bastion for slow travel in this magical corner of Europe.
