Once a residence for Baltimore’s most eligible bachelors, the Latrobe Building has entered a new era. Designed in 1912 and now home to Hotel Ulysses, this Italian Renaissance Revival landmark in the city’s Mount Vernon Historic District has been reimagined with theatrical flair.
Architecture from Quinn Evans and interiors by Ash (the design collective behind sister properties The Siren Hotel in Detroit and Hotel Peter & Paul in New Orleans) draw from a vibrant palette of references; think John Waters’ Baltimore, Indian artisanal craft, and the glamour of cinema and literature.
A member of Design Hotels, Ulysses offers 116 guest rooms and suites, each styled in one of four saturated hues: cerise, citron, jade, or azure. The interiors evoke a kind of louche maximalism, with canopy beds, quilted bedding, hand-beaded lampshades from India, vintage objets d’art, and bold, patterned carpets forming richly textural backdrops for stays that feel both decadent and transportive.
Public spaces extend the visual narrative with Ash—Bar, that channels the slow, convivial spirit of old-world cafés; and Bloom’s, a sultry cocktail lounge just off the lobby, glowing with mirrored surfaces and Art Deco curves. With a drinks list that time-travels from the Prohibition era to the Studio 54 days, this decadent spot manages to blend spectacle and sanctuary.
Guest rooms range from compact, characterful boltholes for solo travellers to expansive suites like ‘Our Lady of the Flowers,’ a verdant hideaway with a clawfoot tub and leopard-print carpet, and the ‘Il Gattopardo Suite,’ whose name nods to Visconti’s cinematic grandeur, and is a space for “emphatic escapes.” Each is fitted with bespoke furnishings, tiled bathrooms, modern amenities and a carefully chosen mix of art sourced from around the globe.
