In Kraków’s historic Kazimierz district, restaurant Dala brings a slice of Sweden to southern Poland, its interiors conceived by local design studio Znamy się as an ode to ritual and landscape. Named after the dalahäst — the painted wooden horse long associated with Swedish festivity and good fortune — the restaurant builds its identity around tradition, from the gentle pause of fika to the communal warmth of midsummer feasts.
The project marks a new chapter for the founders of Kaffe Bageri Stockholm, expanding their vision beyond the café into a fully realised dining experience. Znamy się draw on Sweden’s expansive forests, still lakes, and painted timber houses; translating these references into a space defined by colour, scent, and memory. Seasonal shifts provide the narrative structure, with interiors that evoke the glow of winter gatherings and the lightness of long summer evenings.
Spice plays a central role in this story with cinnamon tones appearing in dark timber shelving and curved seating forms, while rich red surfaces recall saffron-infused baking associated with winter festivities. Elsewhere, soft green curtains and sculptural lighting reference cardamom, introducing moments of intimacy throughout the dining rooms. Together, these elements create a environment that connects Sweden’s culinary traditions with its visual language.
The entrance establishes the celebratory spirit immediately. Floral arrangements suspended above communal tables and preserved within the bar’s surface evoke midsummer rituals, while smaller rooms offer quieter corners framed by draped textiles and delicate metal structures. The presence of herbs and natural materials reinforces the connection to Sweden’s landscape and its enduring relationship with nature.
At once homely and considered, Dala balances familiarity with a splash of modern. Open shelving, natural finishes, and carefully composed details reflect the owners’ dedication to Scandinavian culture, creating a place where the pace softens, light shifts, and every detail invites you to stay a little longer.
