Casa Montelongo, Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura's Casa Montelongo is a stunning, minimalist retreat where architecture, art, and light redefine island serenity...

Set among the volcanic plains and lunar landscapes of northern Fuerteventura, Casa Montelongo is a two-suite micro hotel that redefines island serenity through architecture, art, and light. Designed by architect Néstor Pérez Batista, the project transforms a 19th-century family home and its adjoining theatre in La Oliva into a minimalist refuge that bridges the traditional and the contemporary.

The property comprises two self-catering units — The Old Theatre and The Old House — each designed for two guests. The Old Theatre unfolds as a fluid open-plan space with kitchen-dining area, generous living room, bedroom with dressing room, and bathroom featuring a rain shower. The Old House, once the family kitchen complete with a wood-burning oven, now offers a spacious bedroom, elegant dressing area, and living-dining space. Both units share a pool and sun terrace framed by stone and sand.

Batista’s design draws on Fuerteventura’s vernacular materials: stone, wood, clay, lime, and glass, all recomposed into a vocabulary of restraint and proportion. Every opening and corridor is calculated to blend boundaries between interior and courtyard. Morning light pours through high apertures, and the desert wind vibrates through the patio. Inside, pale surfaces and clean lines invite stillness, while 300-thread-count cotton sheets and curated art add an understated sense of luxury.

Breakfast is delivered daily to each unit, an unhurried ritual of fresh pastries, fruit, and local juice; served whenever guests please. Art includes sculptural works by Óscar Latuag, whose abstract forms nod to the island’s flora and mineral pigments.

Casa Montelongo offers a peek into the island’s past. For travellers drawn to design, solitude, and the surreal landscapes of Fuerteventura, this is where the concept of slow living becomes a bold reality.
