Bunkhouse Hotels open their first lodgings in Houston, Hotel Saint Augustine located in the eclectic Montrose neighbourhood and now home to 71 hotel rooms and suites, an all-day lobby lounge, listening room, event space, destination restaurant, and a cloistered circular courtyard pool.
In keeping with Bunkhouse’s tradition of naming hotels after patron saints, Hotel Saint Augustine’s origin is inspired by several references: the patron saint of printing, given its proximity to the Menil Drawing Institute, as well as a nod to the month of August for the late summer nostalgia it brings.

Situated on Museum Row adjacent to the Menil Collection campus, the hotel features architecture by renowned Texas firm Lake|Flato, the sprawling build consisting of five small two-storey properties spread across 2.2 acres. Each building is connected by open-air bridges and terraces, fostering a residential atmosphere. The brick exterior walls feature projecting bays with screened porches, complemented by a series of beguiling gardens. The landscape was also a central element of the design with landscape architecture by Texas studio, Ten Eyck, who worked with The John Fairey Garden on cultivating a collection of plants for the grounds.
Bunkhouse Hotels, alongside developer The Marchbanks Company, collaborated with Post Company on the interior design, creating a space that feels homely with moments of whimsy for a one-of-a-kind destination for travellers. To complement the hotel’s location adjacent to the Menil Collection campus, the artwork throughout the property has intentionally been kept minimal to create a serene environment through artful elements found in the hotel, such as furniture, textures, lighting, objects, and landscaping choices.

The guest rooms can be found throughout the differing buildings, ranging in categories from the 200 square foot ‘Petite Queen’ rooms to the ‘Atelier’ suites complete with a private outdoor living space. Each room and suite boasts playful details and furniture to lend a surrealist edge to the composed décor. Monochromatic hues of blue, deep red, sage, and mustard envelope each bed and ceramic wall tiles emphasise a true colour study, while velvet drapes and textures juxtaposed by the dark ebonised wood oak flooring add a level of indulgence into the space. Bunkhouse Hotels custom-designed robes can be found in each guest room as can bath amenities by Los Angeles-based woman owned, Klur.
Perseid, located within the hotel is a neighbourhood bistro by chef Aaron Bludorn, serving French cuisine through the eyes of the Texas Gulf Coast while interiors nod to the surrealist landscape created for the entire hotel with ombre dipped wall treatments and hand painted textural abstract murals that create a sense of intimacy across the rooms, alongside an eclectic range of furniture, including Art Deco inspired pendants.
The Augustine Lounge and Listening Room is the place to enjoy breakfast and an all-day menu alongside a full bar, and boasts a refurbished Otari MX5050 BII-2 Restored Tape Recorder, reel to reel player, and a record player, providing a constant flow of music through the hours.
A stay in this hotel allows guests to immerse themselves in the unique blend of art, culture, and hospitality that is singularly Houston; Hotel Saint Augustine continuing Bunkhouse’s tradition of property’s with guest experience at their heart.
