The Shape of Things to Come

Sculptural bag collection from up-and-coming designer signals big things...

I’m not going to kid you on that handbags are an area of great personal expertise, but those in the know are making very favourable noises (sometimes slightly disturbing gurgling noises) about the debut range from Berlin firm Alpha Cruxis, headed by Aussie designer and leather maestra Rebecca Martin. An elegant, sculptural series of lookbook images from photographer Monika Holzner only serving to heighten the fervour.

Geometry is a collection of five bags – two shoulder bags, two clutch bags and one coin purse – made from the finest veggie-tanned Italian leather, cut and sewn by hand at the Berlin studio. The material is 3mm thick, which gives the bags enough rigidity to keep their striking sculptural shapes, and they are lined with black suede and finished with silver hardware. The Geometry collection, which ranges from €210 to €560, is available from the Alpha Cruxis webstore or from Copenhagen’s Henrik Bivskov Boutique. Rebecca’s connection to Denmark goes back to an internship at outré fashion brand Barbara i Gongini, having moved to Europe in 2011 after graduating in Fashion from Melbourne’s RMIT the year before. Meteoric.
