Maison Roz, Pont-Aven

Wunder’s reactivate family home, Maison Roz, through archival research, sensitive restoration, and an organic lived-in approach...

Set within three hectares of parkland overlooking the river Aven, Maison Roz is a refined Breton retreat with a strong sense of continuity. Reached by a path of centuries-old trees, the 19th-century house sits comfortably within its surroundings; its granite façade a familiar sight in this beautiful corner of Pont-Aven.

Originally acquired in the 1860s by the family of architect Augustin Decaux, Maison Roz was conceived as a chalet de mer: a holiday home designed for escape, away from the pace of city life and close to nature. Passed down through five generations, the house remained intact in spirit, even as time left its mark. When Élodie Dumas and Augustin Decaux of Wunder took over the property, their ambition was clear; to “restore its character without keeping it in the past.”

Guided by family archives and historic photographs, the restoration brings long-hidden details back into focus. Carved wooden friezes once again crown the granite exterior, while inside, a painted fresco, original roofline elements, and a spiral staircase reconnect the house with its early identity. Above the granite fireplace, mirrored wood panelling reflects light from the river and surrounding trees, adding depth while staying true to the language of classic seaside villas.

The interiors balance history with contemporary design. Antique furniture and objects show the marks of earlier lives, set alongside modern pieces including Axel Chay’s Coquillage wall light, USM consoles, and bespoke furniture designed by Élodie and Augustin themselves. On the ground floor, the open kitchen and living room form the social heart of the house. A large reclaimed wooden table seats twelve, paired with pale-blue HAY chairs, while the kitchen, finished with Normandy Ceramics tiles, is designed for generous, unhurried mealtimes.

Two terraces extend the living spaces outdoors. One opens directly onto the river and is furnished with Palissade designs by Ronan Bouroullec for HAY alongside Vincent Sheppard pieces, while a second, more private terrace connects a suite with the indoor pool.

Upstairs, four double bedrooms follow a shared palette of blues, warm wood tones, and soft yellow accents; reflecting the changing light of Brittany. Dedar fabrics, botanical cushions, and custom headboards add character, including one carved entirely from wood in a nod to traditional Breton craftsmanship. Premium bedding, Bonsoirs linens, and CODAGE body care complete the experience.

The former sail storage space has been reimagined as a children’s dormitory and playroom, offering a relaxed hideaway filled with toys, soft furnishings, and a video projector for shared family evenings.

Named after the nearby port of Rosbras, Maison Roz presents a thoughtful vision of Brittany, one that’s calm and considered, deeply design conscious, and where heritage remains present but a whole new story unfolds.
