New York’s dining scene channels the warmth and vitality of Brazil with Berimbau Brazilian Table, the latest venture from Rio-born restaurateur Mario de Matos. The Midtown restaurant is an evolution of his West Village original, offering a more expansive, design-led expression of the the country’s spirit, a place where modernist elegance meets samba culture.
Drawing on Brazil’s celebrated Midcentury Modern movement, the space exudes easy sophistication. Tropical hardwoods and woven wicker are balanced with smooth terrazzo underfoot, a nod to the mosaic pavements of Ipanema. Amber and amethyst-hued linen lamps filter a warm, honeyed glow across dark timber tables and forest-green booths. Rope-woven ceilings and soft curves temper the clean architectural lines, creating an atmosphere that feels effortlessly relaxed.
Design extends beyond the furniture with art taking centre stage. Murals by David Jose bring the energy of the ocean to the main floor, while a 3D installation by Justin Amrhein evokes Brazil’s undulating landscape while speaking to the country’s environmental realities. Nearby, works by Indigenous artist Waxamani Mehinako celebrate the heritage of the Xingu territory, blending contemporary expression with deep cultural reverence.
At its heart sits New York’s first dedicated caipirinha bar, framed by twin arches that echo Rio’s Two Brothers Mountain. Stadium-style seating adds a social aspect to the space. A private dining room, hidden behind frosted glass and wood panels, offers a quieter refuge, while at the entrance, Barbosa, a jewellery boutique by designer Jacqueline Barbosa, will pique the interest of those with a passion for retail.
Mario de Matos and his team — including chef Victor Vasconcelos and bartender Pedro Bezerra — deliver a menu and drinks list that highlights a wide range of cachaça-based drinks, but it’s the atmosphere that guests will connect with at Berimbau Brazilian Table; a passionate ode to the point where austere design meets the wild spirit of carnival.
