Tella Thera is a new all-suite resort in northwestern Crete, redefining what sustainable luxury can look like. Located in Kissamos Bay, the family-owned property is rooted in respect for the island’s rugged landscape, fusing environmental consciousness with contemporary design. From partially subterranean suites and planted rooftops to a zero-waste restaurant and holistic spa, this is conscious hospitality reimagined for the modern traveller.
Named after Tellus, the Roman goddess of the Earth, and the Greek words therós (summer) and therismós (harvest), Tella Thera embodies a philosophy of connection and conservation. “Our passion for sustainability and love for hospitality inspired us to create a haven that incorporates environmental stewardship in every corner,” say the faces behind the project, Loukas Tourkomanis and Chevon Low, who oversaw every aspect of the hotel’s creation.
Working with Athens-based Pieris.Architects and landscape architect Karolos Chanikian, the couple embraced a ‘future primitivism’ approach, blending ancient ideas of simplicity with forward-thinking, sustainable design. The result is an organic architecture that follows the land’s natural contours; think structures disappearing into the hillside, and arched, north-facing windows that invite natural light and airflow throughout. Interiors favour wood, stone, and earth in muted tones of beige, olive, and grey, creating an atmosphere of calm and introspection.
Across the Design Hotels member’s 15,000 square metre grounds, 20 spacious suites and a Signature Villa offer an understated take on island luxury. Each space feels like a private sanctuary, framed by panoramic Aegean views. Custom furniture, handcrafted details, and locally inspired photography reinforce the resort’s devotion to nature and craft.
Anemoia Restaurant continues the ethos, celebrating Crete’s seasonal bounty with a plant-forward menu and zero-waste philosophy. The spa, meanwhile, offers a journey of restoration through magnesium pools, chromotherapy, and open-air yoga among olive trees.
Centred around The Grove — a serene landscape of meditative paths and age-old trees — Tella Thera captures the essence of slow, grounded living. Here, luxury isn’t about excess, it’s about presence, balance, and the quiet power of place.
