Pátio do Tijolo, Lisbon

Indulge in the tranquil tempo of life by rediscovering the art of 'slow living' amid the serenity of Lisbon's Pátio do Tijolo...

An urban sanctuary so laid back it’s horizontal, Pátio do Tijolo is a truly beautiful 24-room boutique hotel that offers its guests a fusion of authentic Lisbon tradition with soothing contemporary aesthetics.

Drawing on the ‘slow life’ concept, this gem of a property is a haven from which to relax and regenerate when in the Portuguese capital. Situated between the cobbled streets of bohemian Bairro Alto and the Príncipe Real district, Pátio do Tijolo’s design is centred around its shared spaces, including a plant-filled courtyard, kitchen and Loureiro salon; each one a wonderful spot to enjoy the simple pleasures of the local cuisine or refreshing drinks available at any time of day.

Created by the Spanish interior designer Natalia Tubella, and the team led by Carina Seelig from Lisbon-based architecture studio Base Geométrica, spaces have been conceived to tie together good design with the welcoming, functional character of a modern guesthouse. Set over three floors, at Pátio do Tijolo neutral colours and natural materials coexist with contemporary design classics such as lighting by Spanish firms Santa&Cole and Marset, handmade Portuguese ceramics and textiles in organic fibres, contemporary photography by local artists, as well as design pieces from Barcelona.

Guest rooms feature pale woods, serene hues and soft fabrics, are available in different sizes and layouts, and offer floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies with views over the Tagus river and the famed 25 de Abril suspension bridge.

Popular gathering places throughout Portugal, ‘patios’ hold a special place in the hearts of the Portuguese, and at Pátio do Tijolo this is no different. A spot to take a moment to read, work or simply contemplate the vegetation — landscape designer Elena Somalo brought together a combination of tropical, Atlantic and Mediterranean plant species — this serene plant-filled conclave invites guest to slow down and treasure life’s simpler things.

In the embrace of Pátio do Tijolo Lisbon, every moment becomes a celebration of tranquility and timeless beauty, making it a shelter to be cherished by all who seek respite in Portugal’s vibrant capital.
