Ondra Bumbalek’s IndustOfTrial Apartment

Designer's ramshackle industrial apartment cum showroom...

When you’re an interior designer working on a budget, what better way to keep costs down than to use your own apartment, first as a canvas and later as a showroom? That’s exactly what young Czech designer Ondrej Bumbalek did, and this is the result.

With a look that’s described as industrial, the place has the flavour of a workshop, with reclaimed wood very much in evidence, alongside wires, pipes, tools and equipment. In fact, if Bumbalek gets cold there’s a circular saw on hand to chop up some of the fittings for firewood. There’s a rough edge feel throughout, and he has made no effort to cut his furniture too precisely, or line up the wall cladding in exact symmetry. Space saving has also been employed to good effect. Bike getting in the way in the hall? Stick it on the wall. Stacked appliances occupy a corner of the bathroom. No excuse for leaving wet towels on the floor in this place…
