Still Making Noise

Sonic Youth bassist reviews parallel art career...

What does a bass player grunge queen do when they are not making sweet beautiful noise with their iconic band Sonic Youth? You are about to find out, as Kim Gordon returns to New York’s White Columns gallery, the scene of her first solo exhibition as an artist. Design Office happened in 1981 – the same year Sonic Youth came into being – and this retrospective looks at Gordon’s work in the intervening years.

Gordon’s art is as gloriously raucous as one might expect from a member of Sonic Youth, and just as current; there’s a lot of visual shouting in her textual reproductions of tweets that have caught her eye – gallery wall retweets rendered as dripping, messy posters. Apart from the social media commentary, Gordon, who graduated from Otis College of Art and Design in L.A. In the late 1970s, presents more painterly works and sculptural pieces. Design Office with Kim Gordon – Since 1980 is showing at White Columns until 19 October.
