Schotten & Hansen has brought its signature Long Board flooring to the newly opened Chiemgauhof Lakeside Retreat on the shores of Lake Chiemsee in Bavaria, Germany. Opened in 2025, the property has been fully reimagined as a series of elegant new buildings designed by internationally renowned Milanese architect Matteo Thun; a long-standing collaborator with the brand.
Thun’s vision divides the retreat into three structures inspired by traditional wooden barns, constructed from local larch and spruce, natural stone, glass, and marble. The design creates a seamless dialogue between inside and out, with 28 water-facing suites featuring Japanese-inspired details, private saunas, and sweeping lake views.
Schotten & Hansen supplied its Long Board flooring in Smoke Light across the lounge, restaurant, Bavarian parlour (Stube), yoga and fitness areas, and the boathouse, while the bar area features a custom colour developed specifically for the project. Every board was specified in close consultation with Thun’s Munich office, with installation handled by long-term partner Pohl and the overall fit-out executed by Kamper. The result is a flooring that brings warmth, natural texture, and artisanal precision to every space.
The Long Board collection sits effortlessly within the retreat’s contemporary Bavarian aesthetic, complementing custom furniture, hand-decorated textiles, traditional tiled stoves, and regionally sourced materials. Its understated elegance reinforces the project’s focus on craftsmanship, sustainability, and connection to place, while enhancing the organic character of both public and private areas.
Chiemgauhof continues the longstanding collaboration between Schotten & Hansen and Matteo Thun, whose work spans landmark hospitality and residential projects worldwide. Together, they reflect a shared commitment to quality, sustainability, and timeless design, proving how careful material selection and architectural vision can transform a lakeside retreat into a space that feels both contemporary and rooted in its region.
