Gambit Bar has opened beneath Newman Street, a moody subterranean addition to Fitzrovia’s late-night landscape. The new venue comes from London hospitality group Kinsfolk & Co, set within The Newman hotel on the corner of Newman and Goodge Street, and is designed to carry guests from afternoon drinks through to after-hours shenanigans.
Interiors have been led by London-based studio LIND + ALMOND, who looked to Fitzrovia’s layered past for direction. Victorian and Art Deco references run throughout, giving the venue a sense of drama while remaining firmly rooted in its surroundings. The bar is designed to shift with the day, accommodating early cocktails as easily as late-night gatherings.
The design draws heavily on the area’s bohemian history, taking cues from artist and writer Percy Wyndham Lewis, a former Fitzrovia resident and founder of the Vorticist movement. His influence appears in the coffered ceiling and the abstract geometry of the burr veneer frontage that stretches the length of the bar. Topped with living copper, the surface is intended to age with use, developing a patina that reflects the rhythm of the room over time.
Green upholstered booths and high-top seating line either side of the space, creating pockets for conversation and long evenings. At the far end, The Stage provides a semi-private setting for up to 15 guests, offering a sense of seclusion without withdrawing from the atmosphere of the bar itself.
The drinks programme nods to the city’s long-standing reputation as a global cocktail capital. Classic flavour profiles are revisited with a contemporary approach, alongside local craft beers and a concise selection of gourmet small plates. Intimate in scale and rich in character, Gambit Bar positions itself as a destination for those looking to settle in and stay a while, right in the heart of Fitzrovia.
