Just outside historic Georgetown, South Carolina, Wicklow Hall has opened its doors as a refined bed and breakfast set across 11 acres of oak trees and manicured gardens. Approached by a tree-lined drive, the property blends the grandeur of its 19th century past with modern comfort, offering eight keys that include three private cottages and a five-room inn within an 1853 residence listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The estate has been carefully restored by husband and wife team David and Judith Rinella, who spent years renovating the property by hand. Salvaged lumber and native materials have been worked into custom furnishings throughout, while historic details such as original hardwood floors, wavy glass windows and ten fireplaces remain intact.
Art plays a central role in the guest experience. A hand-painted marshland mural by Beaufort artist Lynne Fensterer greets guests in the main house, complemented by photography from Nigel Parry, works by Ralph Gibson, and striking images captured by David Rinella himself. Together, they transform the interiors into a living gallery that reflects both global artistry and local character.
Each room is individually designed with private kitchenettes, working fireplaces and Italian marble bathrooms detailed with sinks inlaid with mother of pearl shells, a subtle nod to the region’s coastal heritage. Furnishings crafted from North Carolina wood and bespoke décor bring warmth, while large windows provide sweeping views of the centuries-old oak canopy.
Shared spaces are equally considered, the breakfast room features textiles by Jenan McClain, and historic outbuildings including an 1831 cottage, a stable and a bungalow provide additional accommodation.
With its historic architecture, curated art, and a connection to the surrounding Lowcountry, Wicklow Hall delivers South Carolina’s famed southern hospitality in a home rich in authenticity.
