Renzo Sandwich is the latest arrival in Montreal‘s Mile End; the deli-style eatery with Italian café sensibilities having opened its doors this summer. Serving fresh sandwiches alongside natural wine, beer, and their playful ‘buzz slush,’ the venue is already becoming a go-to for casual dining in one of the city’s coolest neighbourhoods.
At 1,275 square feet, the space is intimate yet lively, designed by architecture studio MRDK to capture both function and a sense of understated nostalgia. The floor features a custom mosaic tile in tones of beige, burgundy, and blue, while a row of soft yellow booths paired with laminate tables provide classic diner comfort along one side of the space. Facing the street, a standing bar with retro stools invites guests to perch with a sandwich while watching the constant motion of St-Laurent outside.
The interior palette stays soft and desaturated, with pale blue tongue-and-groove boards lining the ceiling, and a muted beige counter that harmonises with the surrounding tones. A large custom-built cabinet houses grab-and-go fridges and a selection of fine goods, both local and imported, blurring the line between sandwich shop and neighbourhood grocery.
Food remains the heart of Renzo. The open kitchen enables customers to see where sandwiches are assembled with care and speed, favourites such as the Philly Cheesesteak, Cuban, Turkey Club, and the Renzo Chicken, all wrapped, pressed, and served with a side of warm hospitality.
Behind the concept are five individuals brought together by a shared passion for food and community. The name itself nods to the address, a contraction of San Lorenzo — the Italian translation of Saint-Laurent — and a fitting tribute to the boulevard outside.
With its combination of quality ingredients, well-crafted interiors, and a spirit of neighbourhood hospitality, Renzo Sandwich is quickly becoming a Mile End staple, offering a fresh yet familiar take on the city’s ever-evolving casual dining scene.
