Next month, chef Jody Williams brings her beloved New York restaurant Buvette to Covent Garden, introducing London diners to the relaxed, neighbourhood spirit that made the West Village original a favourite for more than a decade. Known in Manhattan for its easy charm and all-day appeal, Buvette has built a reputation as the sort of place people return to again and again, whether for coffee, a quick bite or a long evening over wine.
The London restaurant sits just behind Neal’s Yard, occupying a characterful space that reflects the area’s long history. Inside, exposed brickwork, warm timber finishes and a vintage tin ceiling frame a welcoming dining room centred around a marble bar. Seating for 80 guests is intentionally compact, encouraging a sociable atmosphere, while a communal table near the Shorts Gardens entrance accommodates groups. Cosier tables for two, including a cellar table, make it equally suited to quieter meals. Thoughtful touches — proper glassware, silver trays and well-made drinks — reinforce the sense of simple hospitality.
Food service begins commences in the morning with good coffee, freshly baked croissants spread with butter and jam, and warm madeleines. Buvette’s signature waffle sandwich with cured bacon and eggs joins softly steamed eggs served with smoked salmon and crème fraîche, or layered into a classic croque monsieur with ham and Gruyère.
An all-day menu continues with dishes such as salade niçoise, carrot râpées and a selection of croques served hot from the oven, including the croque forestier filled with roasted mushrooms. Guests can drop by for an afternoon aperitif or settle in for dinner, where plates might include steak tartare, coq au vin with finely cut frites, or seasonal cassoulet during colder months.
The drinks list remains firmly French, spanning Crémants, Loire Valley whites, rosés and approachable Beaujolais, alongside classic cocktails and a French 75 prepared with cognac, lemon and champagne.
Designed by Jody herself, this new opening is being lauded as a welcoming addition to Covent Garden’s dining scene; informal, resolutely Manhattan, unmistakably London.
