Set on a leafy stretch of Jl. Raya Sanggingan, surrounded by galleries and creative studios, Oaken Lab Ubud introduces a new chapter for the Indonesian fragrance brand, opening a space that moves seamlessly between perfumery, hospitality and social gathering. A destination rather than a conventional shop, the Ubud outpost pairs a retail boutique with The Oaken Stillroom, a concept blending scent-led drinks, small plates and communal experience under one roof.
Following the success of its first Bali location in Pererenan, the new store strengthens Oaken Lab’s presence on the island while responding directly to Ubud’s creative pulse. Known for its connection to craft, ritual and cultural exchange, the neighbourhood provides a natural setting for a brand whose approach to fragrance draws heavily from atmosphere and memory. Rather than operating as a standalone retail environment, the project feels connected to the creative life of the local surrounds.
Designed by Rantara Studio, the space builds upon an existing structure, allowing original architectural elements to remain visible while new interventions introduce contrast. Within the property’s yard, two existing temples — a Padmasana shrine and a Sanggah Sedana Karang — have been carefully preserved, connecting the project to its spiritual surroundings. The spatial journey unfolds gradually with a dark, metal-clad entrance room creating an introspective starting point, before a glass passage introduces light and transition, opening into a softer communal area.
Visitors traverse the store as a sequence of experiences. The First Room focuses entirely on scent, encouraging slow exploration. Beyond it, The Common Room centres on interaction, while The Stillroom is where botanical aperitifs, cocktails and non-alcoholic elixirs extend fragrance into flavour, and is beautified further by an outdoor garden designed for disconnection and conversation.
Developed with collaborators Elemental, the drinks and food offering translates Oaken Lab’s sensorial language into taste. Small plates built around local ingredients sit alongside beverages poured from eight signature taps, including cold brew from local roasters, kombucha, craft beer and a rotating selection of zero-proof and alcoholic cocktails inspired by botanical notes found in perfumery.
As Oaken Lab Co-Founder Cynthia Wirjono explained, “We want to continue expanding the world of Oaken Lab in a considered way, across product, space, and experience. This means developing fragrances, but also exploring how they connects to other senses, formats, and disciplines. Always with a focus on restraint, materiality, and atmosphere. The goal is not scale for its own sake, but to build something with depth, something people can return to and discover differently over time.”
With its Ubud opening, Oaken Lab presents a space that defies convention and looks toward the bright future of this design-conscious lifestyle brand.
