Belvedere is the latest project from Buenos Aires-based Grizzo Studio, a space where tradition and modernity meet without fanfare. From the outside, the restaurant holds onto its past with a corner building that boasts a classical façade. Inside, however, the design reveals a contemporary calm with an interplay of materials, light, and warmth to create a welcoming, almost domestic vibe.
The architects explained how their primary purpose was preservation, not nostalgia, and that by maintaining the original exterior, Grizzo Studio introduced a deliberate contrast between classic and the contemporary. Those who step through the door are greeted by a palette of terracotta and burgundy tones, hues that nod to the building’s existing granite flooring, these earthy colours bringing cohesion to the space, alongside an air of refinement.
At the heart of the restaurant sits an L-shaped counter, dressed in a checkerboard pattern, a reference to traditional tablecloths and the conviviality of Argentine bodegones or Italian family kitchens. It’s both a functional and sentimental piece.
To enhance the sense of flow, a sharply defined dropped ceiling traces the length of the main room. This subtle structural move also guides the eye toward the kitchen creating a space that feels open, elegant, and approachable.
From empanadas to pizza, pasta to rice, and meat and vegetable dishes, this ‘Casa de Comidas’ is an ode to good honest fare and authentic homely cooking.
