To mark their first foray into the Latin America and Caribbean markets, EDITION Hotels have collaborated once again with architecture and design studio Rockwell Group, the lifestyle chain conceived by Ian Schrager and Marriott International opening their doors in Mexico’s north-eastern Yucatán Peninsula with a staggering property set over a 620-acre nature reserve.
With 182 guest rooms, including 30 suites, The Riviera Maya EDITION at Kanai has been designed with a minimal environmental footprint to protect and preserve the surrounding ecosystem; the ancient Mayan land delivering nothing short of its name, meaning ‘Paradise on Earth.’
Most guest rooms face the water, with those on the ground floor treated to a private plunge pool with outdoor space surrounded by the mangroves. A calming oasis has been achieved through the use of light and airy materials and colours, and despite living spaces flowing into one another — the bathroom is entered through a large five-foot-wide sliding door and contains a wet room, custom tub, and monumental sink — to make the sleeping area more intimate, a curved sofa divides the space, which also features a custom four-poster bed with draping swag, custom lighting and nightstands.
The resort has been designed to maximise waterfront views and lush greenery. Its infinite lines and soft geometries float above a 400-year-old canopy of low-lying mangroves. Consisting of three buildings with a spa at the centre and a cenote as its focal point, features also include a rooftop that flows into a manmade pool, open-air corridors, two miles of pristine white-sand beaches and North America’s largest penthouse suite.
Kitchen at EDITION is the resort’s all-day dining experience, helmed by chef Ruano. The geometric design of the roof in the lobby extends into the dining area, forming a pergola, while greenery continues from the exterior to the interior dining room, adorning the wooden beams along the ceilings. The property’s signature restaurant — also by Ruano — is KI’IS, a devine spot with views of the pool and white-washed spaces that transport you to a luxurious beach hut.
