Located within Barcelona’s exceedingly slick new design hotel, Sir Victor, steps away from the city’s classiest street, Passeig de Gràcia, THE ENTOURAGE GROUP’s MR PORTER steakhouse brings a level of dining one may find more akin to ritzy Manhattan than the Catalan capital.
A refreshing take on the on the modern steakhouse, this high-end restaurant is seductive, modish and flavoursome—a culinary experience that promises to tickle the tastebuds of foodies whilst attracting the cool crowd and devotees of design; architects BARANOWITZ + KRONENBERG drawing inspiration from what is one of the most culturally-rich destinations in the world to create a dining room that encourages both mingling and clandestine moments.
Open from breakfast through to dinner (when it makes that transformation into Barcelona’s hippest new chophouse), MR PORTER blends two concepts into one, offering a comprehensive steak menu alongside a lighter fish and vegetable menu. Using only the highest quality of products alongside the finest cuts of beef, diners may tuck into Lady Mignon, sirloin, chateaubriand and rib eye; each bursting with flavour and unparalleled taste explosions. (The latter, an oft-underrated cut, arrives cooked to literal perfection, and melts in the mouth as its charred flesh lingers.)
Set over 300 square metres, the lush MR PORTER dining room is made up of a harmony of lines, colours, and shapes; from discreet booths to a central 360-degree island bar where guests sip cocktails underneath copper mesh chandeliers with the rest of the city’s beautiful people. Settling into a booth at the back of the restaurant—strategically so, for MR PORTER is a fine spot for people watching—we order a glass of crisp, local cava whilst perusing the menu; our friendly and informed waiter bringing us a fresh-from-the-wood-fired-oven MR PORTER Focaccia to nibble on while we make our choice. With bread this good, one knows they’re in for a veritable tango through taste sensations.
What follows is a culinary journey that takes us from land to sea and back again. Sharing the freshest Gillardeau oysters and plates that include spicy yellow tail sashimi; that delectable rib eye with a side of Iberico cauliflower mac ‘n’ cheese; grilled lobster with herb butter and a ‘spicy pile of tomatoes’ side; roasted baby cauliflower; and a selection on sinful desserts. The white chocolate cheesecake (with ‘strawberry explosion’ and basil caviar) not only blows you away with rich taste and delicate texture, but has to be one of the most Instagrammable deserts of the year; Thai coconut is the perfect palette cleanser to top it all off.
Simple but extravagant, masculine yet feminine, MR PORTER is a must go-to destination for Barcelona locals or hungry travellers. And when you’ve munched on all the meat you can manage, don’t forget to pop onto the rooftop at the Sir Victor, where merrymakers can carry on cocktail drinking late into the night surrounded by some of the city’s most inspired views.
