Listen04 is an artist that values his anonymity, and given the nature of his paintings, it’s probably a wise move. Now don’t get me wrong — I’m not for one minute suggesting that he wears this veil of secrecy because he is a cowardy-custard. If I went round exhibiting pictures of Busta Rhymes and Eminem with big pairs of tits, I would also be adopting a false name and staying well under the radar.
Whoever this Listen04 is, he’s not afraid to send up some of popular cultures biggest names, pitching his creations anywhere from the merely irreverent to the wilfully but nonetheless humorously insulting. Andy Whorehole, sorry Warhol, might not be around to take umbrage at his rather unflattering depiction, but those newly-buxom hip-hop figures certainly are. It’s a genre that does tend to favour shootings, is all I’m saying. Anyway, that’s Listen04’s problem, we just get to stand back and chuckle as the puns keep on coming, right up until the controversial street artist sucker punches you with a dose of harsh reality. God Bless America, at One Grand Gallery in Portland, Oregon, features 1,000 of Listen04’s paintings and drawings. Closing date is 28 June.
