The Art of Fundraising

Gallery transforms into fake museum – complete with gift shop – to raise cash...

How many of you get sucked in to the gift shop on your way out of a museum or attraction? Don’t feel bad – a lot of thought has gone into herding you towards the tills, and at least you know that your souvenir tea-towel is helping to keep the place open. The environments which museums and other institutions use to extract vital funds from their visitors, and the creative concept of fundraising in general, is being explored by the curatorial team at c3 Contemporary Art Space, Melbourne, as the gallery itself tries to raise some much needed cash.

To this end, c3 has constructed Faux Museum. Billed as “an institution within an institution”, the installation covering the whole gallery replicates a museum in every detail, from its exhibition zones (a traditional salon hanging room, and an educational space), to a café and of course the all-important gift shop. The Faux Museum shop is selling artworks, prints, ceramics, jewellery, textiles and homewares created by a massive list of participating artists and artisans. Pop along to enjoy Faux Museum until 14 December… and please exit through the gift shop.
