Bridging the Divide

Pro designers help disadvantaged fulfil potential through workshop collaborations...

A welfare project in Holland is bringing together disadvantaged workers and industry leading product designers in an effort to craft a range of objects combining aesthetic appeal with a social conscience.

Social label is the brainchild of Studio Boot’s Petra Janssen and Simone Kramer of C-Mone, and has enlisted the help of designers including Piet Hein Eek and Roderick Vos to help guide the products from drawing board to the retail arena. The workers have a range of problems, from learning difficulties to addiction, which make it difficult for them to get involved in work on their own. As well as practical skills, the participants learn soft skills such as teamwork, and benefit from the motivation of seeing their products through to the finished article. Social label’s first range >HOUT was a collection of furniture led by Eek and Woodworks workshop, which specialises in teaching woodwork skills to the disabled. The ceramic vase series >VAAS has been in the works since last year, designed by an autistic artist from the Artenzo workshop and topped with a crown by Vos. The >HOUT range is available from the group’s webshop, with the >VAAS products due to be added soon.
