CommuniToy’s Toy Hacking

Subversive workshops bring upcycling to an impressionable audience...

Toy fans of a nervous disposition may want to look away now – scissor-wielding sisters intent on showing Barbie who’s boss: sign up here. Tucked in a corner at this year’s brilliant Designersblock, non-profit arts organisation Exploring Senses – formed by artists Hannah Coxeter and David Allistone – had boxes of disturbing delights on display; the dark outcomes of their CommuniToy project lurking with creative intent.

Hosting workshops for young whippersnappers seven years plus, the duo bring the upcycling, DIY craft trend to an impressionable audience – imparting skills, resource and social interaction to a new generation; through wickedly subversive means.

So, whether you want your Bart Simpson to be bulging with Theodore Chipmunk’s innards, or you’re partial to Pooh Bear with the body of a sexy plastic doll – CommuniToy is the convention-prodding, family friendly arts initiative for you. Just keep your eyes on the little buggers when the lights go out – you have seen Toy Story haven’t you?
