Back in late 19th and early 20th century, Bombay – now known as Mumbai – was awash with Bombay, or Irani as they were also known, cafés. Opened by immigrants from Persia, the cafés were an essential part of urban living, and carried off a fabulous style of faded elegance thanks to their Brentwood chairs, slowly turning fans, chipped tiling and precarious electrics. Fast forward a hundred years or so, and Covent Garden now has its very own Bombay Café, in the shape of Upper St. Martin’s Lane’s Dishoom, a splendidly authentic space with seriously good food and some very special cocktails, or, ‘tipples’ as they call them.
