Nobody and nothing is perfect, and that can only be a good thing. Defects lead to a re-evaluation; change; growth; adaptation and renewal. An imperfection can even make something more beautiful, as Argentinian duo Elian (Elian Chali) and Pastel (Francisco Diaz) have illustrated with their flawed but fantastic joint exhibition Fallas. The word itself refers to a defect, but in the plural the title signifies more, carrying connotations of consequences and alterations.
The two artists have exhibited together before with collaborative works, but this time they are each contributing their own pieces on the same theme which, with their contrasting styles yet unified theme, co-exist harmoniously at Barcelona’s Montana Gallery. Pastel, who often presents his interpretations of the natural world on man-made, sometimes crumbling, structures, translates his work smoothly to the gallery setting, while his compatriot’s interrupted lines of broken fluidity are a natural fit. Closing date for the show is 26 June.
