The global story continues for Rapha in Asia, as the cycling world’s most influential brand lands in mainland China with its first Clubhouse. Set within a restored 1925 mansion in Shanghai, the project marks a decisive step for Rapha and a nod to the city’s fast-growing cycling culture. Created with London-based Seen Studios, the space introduces Rapha’s next-generation Clubhouse concept, a contemporary riff on the Italian circolo, conceived as a gathering point for riders and a hub for the community.
Inspired by the calm elegance of Italian cafés, the Shanghai Clubhouse balances heritage with modern precision. Walnut, stainless steel, white oak and ceramic tiling form the architectural backbone, accented subtly with Rapha’s signature pink. Clean lines and careful detailing create a sense of refinement, while echoes of classic bicycle craftsmanship run throughout the space. The result feeling very much a home for riders rather than a conventional retail environment.
Every element has been shaped with cyclists in mind from helmet hooks, purposeful display systems and café tiles referencing Roubaix patterns, and — although the building’s historic fabric remains present — its original character forms a subtle counterpoint to the brand’s contemporary identity.
The opening reflects Rapha’s growing audience across China. The Rapha Cycling Club now counts more than 400 members in Shanghai and Beijing, and this year’s Women’s 100 saw over 1,000 riders take part across the mainland; clear evidence of a culture in motion.
“We are incredibly proud to have collaborated with Rapha on the next generation of their iconic Clubhouses,” says Alex Edwards, design director at Seen Studios. “Together, we have created a space that is more than a store but a cultural beacon for cyclists. An atmosphere that embodies the inviting nature of Italian café culture, the refined functionalism of 1950s design (a tribute to cycling’s ‘Golden Age’) and Rapha’s steadfast dedication to connection and craftsmanship.”
First launched in London in 2012, Rapha’s Clubhouses now span Europe, North America and Asia Pacific. Shanghai’s opening signals a n exciting shift in the brand’s evolution, a new base for riders, and a fresh waypoint in Rapha’s global journey.
