HBA San Francisco has completed the redesign of Sofitel New York, delivering a refreshed vision for the brand’s US flagship in Midtown Manhattan. The project brings Parisian savoir-faire into conversation with the pace and precision of New York, drawing on the shared Art Deco history of both cities without focusing too much on nostalgia.
The design takes cues from early 20th century Paris and New York, filtered through references to French fashion, European craftsmanship and the city’s architectural language. Art Deco and Art Moderne influences appear in structured forms, layered detailing and material choices, with black, white, grey and gold forming a measured base. Colour and contrast arrive through artwork, metallic finishes and pops of colour.
Stone and timber frame the entrance, with symmetrical concierge desks and open metal screens guiding guests into the foyer. White marble floors sit alongside deep green walls and crisp panelled detailing, while sculptural lighting and considered furnishings soften the geometry of the space. It’s formal without being stiff. The grand staircase, meanwhile, is framed by a Lasvit chandelier, its glass petals catching and reflecting light across the space. At reception, burnished brass desks sit against patterned floors.
Guest rooms take a quiet approach with French-inspired wall panelling and refined mouldings that provide structure, offset by brass fittings, smoked glass and lacquered wood finishes. Softer tones appear in textiles and upholstery, adding warmth to the otherwise controlled palette. Suites build on this with richer colours and custom furnishings that introduce a more residential feel.
At street level, Social 45 Bar & Bistro completes the update, where curved brass forms, emerald flooring and illuminated bottle displays create a refined setting.
A considered redesign from HBA San Francisco that refreshes Sofitel New York while staying true to its Franco-New York identity.
