In Mérida’s most storied districts, two singular properties — Casa Amate 61 and Casa Amate 62 — bring a fresh take on sustainable design, cultural immersion, and modern hospitality. Located just two and a half kilometres apart in the neighbourhoods of La Mejorada and Santa Ana, the duo offer a complementary yet distinct experience; connected by a shared reverence for the Yucatán’s vernacular architecture and ancestral memory.
Led by architect Fernando García and OWN studio, the restoration of these century-old buildings blends clean Art Deco lines with local materials and ancient techniques. The result is an expressive, retro-inspired aesthetic defined by signature arched latticework, lofty ceilings suited to tropical heat, and the earthy tones of natural chukum plaster.
Casa Amate 61, a pastel-pink former residence, now serves as a premium hostel with four private suites and four six-bed bunk rooms. The three-storey building opens around a lap pool and mural-filled courtyard, with a rooftop terrace, coworking lounge, and two plunge pools. A short walk away, Casa Amate 62 is painted a bold indigo and houses 19 private rooms and two shared rooms in a more traditional hotel format. Set beside the emblematic cantina La Negrita, it features twin pools, a rooftop solarium and outdoor cinema.
Interiors by Mex&Co Studio Design, led by Steisy Echeverría, include locally sourced tzalam and cedar wood furniture, handwoven textiles, and artisan ceramics. Casa Amate’s commitment to conscious hospitality extends to its own line of melipona bee honey products, supporting regional beekeepers and biodiversity programmes, including a tapir sanctuary in Kinchil.
With a focus on forging genuine local connection, Casa Amate hosts free yoga classes, creative workshops, and thematic tours through its Amate Experiencias programme. Cafés and bars at both sites welcome guests and locals alike, while day passes allow non-guests to soak up the hotel’s atmosphere.
