Postcard Bakery, West Village

The team behind Williamsburg's Nami Nori are expanding their cult following with new West Village bakery concept, Postcard...

The team behind much-loved Nami Nori in Williamsburg open a new Japanese bakery and bubble tea shop in New York City‘s West Village. Although best known for their acclaimed temaki rolls, frequent customers soon caught wind of their fresh-baked desserts such as Mochurros served with lemon curd, and Sesame Miso Chocolate Chip Cookies.

To further satisfy this ever-expanding cult following, the team — Lisa Limb, Taka Sakaeda, and Jihan Lee, who met while working under three-star Michelin sushi chef Masa Takayama — decided to open Postcard, an intimate outpost with a menu that offers an assortment of sweet and savoury pastries, cakes and Japanese sandos, alongside bubble tea, milk tea and coffee.

The vibrant venue has been designed by Sarah Carpenter & Studio, who conceived a space that embodies playfulness and decadence. A custom, oversized, curved glass and polished metal display case acts as the centrepiece of the space, and is juxtaposed by vivid red walls and arched ceiling; a nod to Japanese lacquerware.

The seating area is home to a quilted butter yellow banquette, dusty pink tables, creamy, peach walls and light yellow and white marble checkered flooring. Custom, grassy green wallpaper, meanwhile, evokes the botanical and geometric influences of Japanese Art Nouveau, and provides a backdrop to blown glass sconces by Brooklyn-based lighting designers, In Common With.

Open from 8am—8pm Wednesday to Sunday, get your fill of fresh Yuzu Langue du Chat; Black Sesame Banana Bread; Raspberry Mochi Donuts; Koji Cheesecake; and Sandos including Chiffon Cake Fruit, Chicken Katsu and Egg. Postcard’s bubble teas are served using only teas grown in Japan and sourced by Kettle Tea, and are available in matcha, hojicha, sencha, sobacha and black tea, with optional toppings like Okinawa Brown Sugar Boba, Coconut Jelly, and homemade syrups composed of the freshest of ingredients.

For fun and healthy fare (as with Nami Nori, Postcard’s menu is gluten-free) and seriously seductive surrounds, West Village’s Postcard is surely set to become another cult classic from this forward-thinking team.
