In the Shadows

Jason Langer tells a 20-year story full of dark corners and brooding figures...

Whether exploring the great European capitals or the cities of his native America, Jason Langer‘s photography shows an artists adept at finding his way around, and displays a talent for seeking out a location’s most interesting places and characters. Twenty Years is a mid-career retrospective which retraces the Arizonan’s footsteps through London, Paris, Berlin and beyond, leading the viewer through urban scenes thick with the black of shadows and evening dresses and pierced by the sharp white of neon and headlights.

The story of Langer’s two decades is one told in a noir visual language, in which even daytime scenes are cloaked in the mystery and drama of night through the photographer’s moody techniques. Langer’s city scenes provide both the backdrop and a central character, supported by the figures he captures flitting past him, on the way to an assignation, or fleeing one. The volume contains 100 images, plus texts from prominent Bay Area arts scene figures John Hill and Michael Shapiro, plus a foreword from Julia Dolan of the Portland Art Museum. Twenty Years is available from publisher Radius Books.
