If you wanted to do something extraordinary in the next 12 months, what kind of a challenge would you choose? Some people might pledge to climb one of the world’s tallest mountains. Others may decide to train for a triathlon. The odd person might even decide to make 12 dozen egg cups in one year…
This fun project belongs to artist Dave Briggs and illustrator Alex Brady, and it started when Alex signed up for pottery classes. Dave thought it might be a wheeze to join his partner, having had a mixed time of it going solo at a previous night class, and hey presto. Alex hadn’t worked with clay before, and neither of them claim to be the most skilled potters to ever throw a lump, but they don’t care – and neither do we! They’ve decided to challenge themselves to make 144 different egg cups in a 12 month period. The reasons? Firstly, Dave and Alex reckon that most egg cups on the market are boring, and despite their limited ceramics experience, are backing themselves to do better. Secondly, it allows Dave, with a fine art background, to collaborate with design-schooled Alex – something they have wanted to do for a while, but could never agree on. The 12 Dozen Egg Cups project is due to be completed in early 2015, and Dave and Alex are keen to find exhibition spaces to show off the whole 144 once they’re done; get in touch with them if you can help.
