The presidentially-named artist Sam W Grant describes painting as second nature – half your luck – but has had to work hard to master his other artistic pursuit, photography. His two practices run in tandem, but admirers of Grant the painter are often unaware of his other passion, and vice versa. That’s about to change as the artist brings both disciplines together for the first time at Loakal Art Gallery in Oakland, California.
A painter from an early age, Grant really started developing his photography after college, where he studied Music Production. His photography and painting had, until recently, maintained two distinct identities, but a year ago that changed as he experimented with hand colouring his photographs. The move was to reveal connections between the genres which Grant continues to explore. The exhibition, called Double Vision, displays in both formats a liberal dose of American nostalgia, but in the case of his paintings, Grant gives things a surreal and subversive twist. Closing date for the show is 28 March.
