Bad Graffiti

Opening a can of whoops-ass on the streets of Detroit...

The murky world of graffiti has evolved over the years to the point where it’s now accepted as a legitimate and important art genre, producing some of the most stunning imagery imaginable. This selection is shit. No, not the shit my homies. Just shit.

Scott Hocking has been touring Detroit with his camera, hunting out the worst examples of spray can misuse and abuse for a new book, Bad Graffiti, available from Black Dog Publishing. Poorly drawn, misspelled, missing the point completely – all these qualities are there in abundance, and give Hocking the kind of pleasure which he wants to share with the wider world. As far as the author is concerned, a lot of the scrawlings fall into the so-bad-it’s-good category (and we agree), and others are really quite funny, whether intentionally or not.

We’re not ones to advocate the vandalism of private property, but if you’re going to do it, at least make an effort people! Fans of this awful artwork might also like to check out our profile of the Shit London Awards 2012 – a similar celebration of crapness.
