Oceanfront hotels in Santa Barbara tend to trade heavily on location. The Milo, Hotel by the Sea has decided that position alone isn’t enough, and following a multi-million-dollar renovation and rebrand, the former Hotel Milo re-emerges with a renewed focus on design, comfort and understated details.
The property sits on the historic site of the Potter Hotel, once a 400 room coastal landmark, and its new identity draws directly from its past. Named after original hotelier Milo Potter, The Milo, Hotel by the Sea, balances heritage with a clearer visual language. A new logo, classic coastal typography and an updated website signal a shift towards something refined, while the Hotel by the Sea tagline keeps things refreshingly honest about what matters most here.
Inside, all 121 guestrooms have been redesigned by Santa Monica-based studio DESIGN360 unlimited. The mood is relaxed and residential, taking cues from European seaside villas and blending them with California restraint. Natural wood floors, custom furniture and rattan and gold accents are paired with a soft palette of blues, creams and sun-washed oak. Subtle flourishes — blush pink glass lamps, playful patterns — bring warmth and character, while a series of bespoke wallcoverings featuring herons offers a quiet nod to the shoreline.
Outdoor spaces have been given equal love. Courtyards are arranged for long, relaxing afternoons, with shaded seating, fire pits and thoughtful additions like a Tiny Library and Discovery Cabinet. Guests are encouraged to borrow books, sketchpads, binoculars or trail maps, creating space for curiosity, rest and a slowing of pace.
Amenities are plentiful with two swimming pools and a hot tub that sit alongside complimentary beach cruisers and beach gear, while guests also receive 24-hour access to a nearby full-service gym. Next door, Chad’s café handles breakfast and lunch.
With its considered redesign, The Milo, Hotel by the Sea is a renewed icon for this iconic Californian coastal destination.
