A restored 19th-century landmark in the heart of Mérida, Hotel Sevilla is a celebration of Yucatán’s architectural heritage, reimagined for modern life. Set within a former colonial house, the Grupo Habita project preserves the soul of the original structure while introducing contemporary interventions that bring a renewed sense of generosity to its spaces.
From the moment guests step inside, old and new sit comfortably side by side. Original stone walls, timber beams, frescoes, wall tiles, and henequen textiles nod to the building’s past, while carefully considered updates open the house to the sky and its intimate gardens. Enlarged windows and skylights allow daylight to filter into the interiors, illuminating cloisters, courtyards, and poolside areas.
Architecture and interior design by Zeller & Moye places nature at the centre of the experience. Vegetation, water, sky, fire, and the movement of air shape the hotel’s vibe, creating moments of calm throughout. The material palette balances restraint with richness; think brass, lacquered steel, stone, and leather, which introduce weight and presence, while a warm scheme of whites, pale greys, and blacks provides a backdrop for the lush greenery that can be found throughout.
Much of the furniture has been designed exclusively for Hotel Sevilla, reflecting a dialogue between modernism, traditional Yucatán architecture, and local craftsmanship. Floors finished in polished ceramic reinterpret colonial materials, blending regional tradition with the contemporary. A definite centrepiece is the sculptural spiral staircase that connects the two levels of the house.
Beyond the 21 rooms, Design Hotels member Hotel Sevilla offers spaces designed for restoration and pleasure alike. A bar and restaurant provide a social hub, while the wellness centre, pool, sauna, and cenote encourage guests to slow down and reconnect. With its preserved façade and carefully layered interiors, Hotel Sevilla stands as a thoughtful revival of Mérida’s architectural legacy, offering a refined retreat that honours history without being bound by it.
