Jason Harvey, Fantasy Composites

NYPD forensic artist Jason Harvey turns eyewitness, in series of imaginary composite drawings...

Ten years as a forensic artist for New York City Police Department’s Forensic Investigation Division have served Fine Art graduate Jason Harvey well. Aside from the obvious benefits of catching bad guys, and acting as a step in the recovery process of victims, Harvey has honed a style that is unique to the traditional art world. A far cry from art and design college, a decade with the NYPD has given the artist a new outlook on human characteristics; concentration on the face’s structural elements key.

Presenting work in a gallery environment for the first time, Jason Harvey’s exhibition at New York’s Fort Gansevoort sees a series of graphite drawings that distort reality — Harvey over-accentuating facial features … a compound of real and figmental properties he calls ‘fantasy composites’, where the art of creating profiles from memory is taken to, and beyond, its limits.

Fantasy Composites at Fort Gansevoort, New York, continues until 10 January.
