Reaching Out

Photographer Paulo Morales is on hand to catch our awkward attempts at reconnection...

There have never been more devices and platforms for connecting with other people than there are today, and yet despite this, many of us have never felt more isolated. Paulo Morales is interested in our struggle to remain a part of something bigger than ourselves, and his photographic series These Days I Feel Like A Snail Without A Shell – a title taken from a Haruki Murakami character describing her fear and isolation – captures the social awkwardness that now pervades everyday life.

Morales describes his practice as documentary, although his relationships with his subjects remains ambiguous, and that he relies on right-place-right-time good fortune to seek him out. From parents grappling with uncooperative children to older family members suffering a generational disconnect, strangers reaching out to one another and those who prefer to turn away from unwanted advances, Morales shows a great knack for spotting a shot, and is able to switch between sadness and humorous absurdity in the space of a frame.
