The Works

Mark Vessey adds to his Collections series with photographic tribute for Shakespeare anniversary...

Not saying that I am one of these people, but if you are the sort who takes an inordinate amount of pleasure from amassing a collection of books whose spines all line up in neat matching groups, then Mark Vessey is the photographer for you. And not just you – Kate Moss and Graham Norton like the Briton’s work enough to fork out for a piece or two to hang in their downstairs loo.

This month Vessey launched William Shakespeare, his latest work portraying the complete works of The Bard as published in the main by Penguin, with a couple of incongruous editions from the likes of the Southern Illinois University Press, whose copy of Much Ado About Nothing printed under the alternative title Love’s Labour’s Won sticks out like a sore thumb. It’s the sort of dog-eared collection you would see in the discount section of a second-hand bookstore, pieced together from numerous house clearances and only achieving their full potential when united with the missing volumes. Vessey created William Shakespeare to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death in 2016, and it is an off-shoot of his ongoing work Collections which celebrates the artist’s love of vintage magazines including Vogue, i-D and The Face. Limited edition prints of William Shakespeare are available to order through Vessey’s website.
