German designer Luisa Kahlfeldt gives humble cardboard an impressive afterlife...

Berlin-born Central Saint Martins graduate Luisa Kahlfeldt gained a wealth of designing experience throughout her studies — producing both her own solo projects, and working alongside names such as Luceplan and Studio Werner Aisslinger.

Creating the Cardboard Stool, Kahlfeldt experimented with everyday material, settling on laminated cardboard … rolled into rough cylinders and shaved down around the edges to highlight coloured layers and pattern of corrugation. ‘The aim of the project,’ Kahlfeldt tells us, ‘was to manipulate the visual language of cardboard and enhance its perceived quality, giving cardboard, one of the most commonly recycled materials, a more interesting and unusual second life.’

Since inception, the stools have gone on to win third place at the Pure Talents Awards — an IMM Cologne/German Design Council collaboration — and have been included at EXTRAORDINARY, an exhibition for new designers at London’s Aram Gallery.
