Frank Spindler is back with a classy canalside restaurant on Berlin's hottest foodie strip...

Berlin might not jump to mind as one of Europe’s great canal cities, but sitting in the sunshine on an ornamental iron bench overlooking the Landwehrkanal it’s difficult to see why. The waterside thoroughfare Paul-Lincke-Ufer, in the Kreuzberg district, is where you’ll find Spindler, the latest restaurant from the very same Frank Spindler behind Sage Club and Spindler & Klatt. Although Frank is the restaurant brains behind the operation, it’s his partner, renowned fashion designer Karolina Preis, who takes credit for the venue’s elegant good looks.

Preis worked within the confines of an industrial building more than a century old. Aside from the generous internal dimensions, however, Spindler is not your typical post-industrial conversion. The team has opted instead for lots of tan leather and traditional wooden furniture, with design elements brought together from Morocco, Spain (tiling) and London (the impressive glass chandelier) among other places. Chef Nicolas Gemin, formerly of Pauly Saal, prepares international cuisine on the three principles of seasonal, regional and home-made, and he’s in good company — the strip on which Spindler sits (home to acclaimed venues such as Horváth and Tin) is rapidly gaining a reputation as Berlin’s foremost foodie location.
