Two worlds collide as David Lynch exhibition brings film and studio art together in Brisbane...

Those with no prior experience of filmmaker David Lynch‘s studio art practice may have some preconceived ideas about what they are in for — and those assumptions would probably be correct. Clay Head with Turkey, Cheese and Ants is one particularly Lynchian creation, as is Arm of Sores, and his dark themes continue through works featuring dangerous and endangered women, violent acts and scenes of mystery and foreboding, shot through with equally dark humour.

David Lynch’s Between Two Worlds is now up and running at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art, and is the first time Australians have had a chance to see a survey of Lynch’s entire artistic output, including films, in one major show. His 50-year career is covered, and during the exhibition’s span, there are on-site screenings of Lynch’s 10 feature films plus experimental works and shorts, documentaries and selected TV projects; the 2007 short Scissors is showing continuously. Seven of the venue’s galleries have been devoted to this show, which has been arranged under three main themes: man and machine, the extra-ordinary, and “psychic aches”. There is a long list of events accompanying the main show, with tickets and details available from the gallery. Closing date for the exhibition is 7 June.
