Eva Stenram's reworked glamour photos pose a challenge to our expectations...

One for the leg men and the fledgling serial killers, the photographic collection Parts by Eva Stenram subverts the eroticism of vintage glamour photography by removing most of the women, creating images that are both jarring and humorous. The disembodied legs reclining on sofas or stretched out on the shag pile in the found images are rendered somewhat sexless by their amputation. Viewers may find themselves filling in the missing pieces themselves, extrapolating the pose in a subconscious effort to complete the image from their imagination. The process is aided by the surprising amount of information that is conveyed by the pose of the remaining leg, such as the angle of the knee, the indentation of the resting surface and considerations of balance. There’s also lots of fun to had simply revelling in the wonderfully kitsch 1960s backgrounds that assume a much greater significance to the overall scene once Stenram has wielded her digital cleaver.

Parts is being shown along with a new collection entitled Positions – centred around the relationship between photography and dance – at Siobhan Davies Studios, London, from 16 January to 22 March.
