Head Case

Jacolby Satterwhite opens his mind to reveal a surreal yet poetic landscape...

Jacolby Satterwhite often finds inspiration in his mother’s artistic practice, using her drawings as a jumping off point for his own work. How Lovely Is Me Being As I Am follows this route; among her thousands of sketches, schematics and inventions, Jacolby found the handwritten phrase above a series of seven sketched architectural structures, which he has taken on and developed through personal reflection to create a “macrocosmos” – outside of time and space and with a surreal yet poetic visual language.

Although his images – presented for the exhibition alongside video and sculpture work – have their genesis in reality, Satterwhite launches off on an almost alien journey; while some of the forms and objects are recognisable, they are presented together in a way that suggests a mental journal, with notes seemingly written as reminders to the artist as much as for the viewer’s information. OHWOW Gallery in Los Angeles is showing Satterwhite’s collection from 15 November to 20 December.
