Extra, Extra!

Novelist Tom McCarthy takes the reins as editor of one-off fictional London newspaper MIRRORCITY...

At first glance, it seems to be a bad time to be launching a London newspaper – after all circulations and ad revenues are circling the drain in print media. But this is an alternative London we are looking at here, and MIRRORCITY is its alternative newspaper, edited by novelist Tom McCarthy and expected to appear for one edition only. McCarthy has been joined by a team of contributors to produce this one-off publication which plays on the realities and fictions of London in the digital age.

Hayward Publishing is printing the newspaper while Hayward Gallery is running a companion exhibition; the show features extracts from the publication as well as an exhaustive line-up of frankly brilliant new work from a raft of important contemporary digital artists working in the city. As well as new text and images from McCarthy, the MIRRORCITY paper contains material from acclaimed writers Chloe Aridjis, Stewart Home and Deborah Levy, and it comes accompanied by a full-colour supplement featuring large format images of the exhibition works and an introductory essay by curator Stephanie Rosenthal. Read all about it in the 64-page publication, available from Hayward Publishing, or stop by the staggering gallery show (at the Southbank Centre) which runs until 4 January 2015.
