Carpenters Workshop Gallery exhibition explores the link between form and movement...

Yinka Shonibare MBE is one of seven contributors invited by Carpenters Workshop Gallery to contribute to a group exhibition of practitioners operating along the border of art and design. Atelier Van Lieshout, Wendell Castle, Ingrid Donat, Vincent Dubourg and Rick Owens are also involved in the Pavilion of Art and Design event, which looks at form as influenced by movement and stands as a gravity-defying homage to futurism.

Nigerian-British artist Yinka Shonibare MBE revisits his work Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle, which stood in London’s Trafalgar Square in 2010, for his new piece Windy Chair I (Orange and Blue). The functional sculpture is a solid manifestation of a fabric being caught in the wind, and features the artist’s signature use of batik material. Yinka Shonibare MBE buys his fabric from Petticoat Lane market, making digital alterations to the pattern before transferring the changes onto the fabric using a paintbrush. Among the other eye-catching exhibits is Vincent Dubourg’s Bhanga Alu – a collection of cabinets in aluminium which look as though they are in the process of exploding from some volatile material stored within – and Rick Owens’ more relaxing day bed, functionaly entitled Black Marble 2 Prong Bench. The Carpenters Workshop Gallery exhibition is on show at PAD London (Berkeley Square, Mayfair) from 15 to 19 October.
