Light Shading

Husband and wife designers elevate the humble HB pencil to new heights...

I haven’t seen a pencil this big since I last watched Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Michael & George is a new husband and wife design agency in East London specialising in lighting and homewares that has seen the potential for reinvention in everyday objects. What better place to start than the good old fashioned pencil – a humble object that can be found in most homes but one that is capable of giving flight to the most amazing creations.

Whether forming an integral part of an artist’s kit, or chucked in a drawer for scribbling the occasional note, the HB pencil is ubiquitous, so it’s fitting that this giant version is the first of the duo’s Stationery Objects range. Standing six feet tall, the body is hand turned cedar topped with hand spun brass and hand blown glass for the lamp, while at the other end there’s a rubber tip and 10 metres of cable that is as flexible as a real pencil line. The HB Lamp is debuting on 12 September at 71 Redchurch Street, Shoreditch, and the Stationery Objects will be exhibited at Tent London as part of London Design Festival.
