Hixster Bankside, Borough Market

Mark Hix's latest venture in an old metalworks south of the river is a nailed-on hit...

London restaurateur Mark Hix has finally ventured south of the river, opening Hixster Bankside in the vicinity of trendy Borough Market and opposite the Tate Modern. The menu is designed with sociable dining in mind – think whole roast chickens and 500g steaks to share, or in our case to guard jealously while growling and stabbing a fork at anyone who tries to get near it. We. Don’t. Share. Food. Normal people will like it though.

The Hixster has chosen a vast Victorian former metalworks as his latest venue, nigh on 7,000 sqft, with the main dining area seating 140. That kind of space is crying out for a statement piece or two, and Hixster Bankside has obliged with neon signage by Tracy Emin and head-swivelling works by British talents Tim Noble & Sue Webster, Henry Hudson, Pauline Amos, Gary Webb and Mat Collishaw thankyouverymuch. There’s a dinky little private dining room, the Cock’n’Bull, seating 10, while downstairs is home to the second incarnation of cocktail swank-a-thon Mark’s Bar (the first is in Soho). Yes please.
