Action Man

Whether it's film noir or photography, Stan Douglas never stays still...

You may remember Canadian artist Stan Douglas from his film Luanda Kinshasa that we featured earlier in the year. In it, Douglas faithfully recreated a 1970s recording studio from the former Columbia Records building, aka The Church, in a look at the influence of African music on New York in that era. The film is just one of many recent Douglas projects that are being shown at Haus der Kunst, Munich; the exhibition entitled Mis en Scène incorporates the best of his work produced since 2008.

Helen Lawrence is another Douglas film from the show, albeit very different in theme and presentation to Luanda Kinshasa. Billed as a film noir, it’s a suspenseful story set in 1948 Vancouver, and the production is brought to life by having actors play their parts live, with images projected on a huge scale onto computer-generated backgrounds to impressive effect. From Douglas’s recent photography archives, Crowds and Riots depicts staged civil unrest, while Midcentury Studio sees the artist imagine himself as a post-war soldier entering into a career as a photojournalist with no training but an eye for interesting action. Mis en Scène runs until 12 October.
